Our history of fish products and health goes back to Norway in the 1850’s. At this time pharmacist Peter Möller invented a new process of manufacture for cod-liver oil, where he heated and used the oil from fresh cod’s liver. The cod-liver oil manufactured this way was purer, better and cheaper. The fact that a third of all Norwegians regularly consume cod-liver oil is largely thanks to Peter Möller. In addition to cod-liver oil, the brand Möller’s has a broad portfolio of omega 3 dietary supplements.
History:
Norwegians have been producing and exporting cod liver oil for more than 1000 years. At first it was used as lamp oil and to impregnate wood and leather. As early as 1645 it was reported that cod liver oil could be used to prevent and cure disease. At the end of the 18th century the first scientific article was published to support this.
In the middle of the 19th century, the pharmacist Peter Möller observed that people along the coast that consumed cod liver oil regularly, were rarely ill. He dedicated himself to finding out how this healthy liquid could be produced with better taste and at a lower price. He developed the method of heat melting – using steam to extract the oil from fresh cod livers. Based on this industrial revolution, the company Peter Möller was founded in 1854.
At first Möller’s Cod Liver Oil was believed to be a good source of vitamin A and D, and the health benefits were associated with these vitamins. Peter Möller believed, however, that there were other significant benefits from fatty acids and other ingredients in the cod liver oil – both known and unknown. Peter Möller was dedicated to understanding more about these benefits.
Since establishing the Peter Möller company, the history has been one of improved processing and methods in order to improve the quality, purity and taste of Möllers cod liver oil. Based on these principals, the company has also expanded its core competence to include a range of Omega-3 products.
Today:
Today Möller’s far exceeds the standards of the European Pharmacopea on cod liver oil, FDA requirements and industry benchmarks. This is achieved by several purification and refinement steps and by strict quality control throughout the entire Peter Möller value chain.
In the early seventies the Danish researchers Bang and Dyerberg ”rediscovered” the Omega-3 fatty acids in studies on Greenland Inuits. Since this time, Möller’s cod liver oil has become synonymous with the perfect Omega-3 source in Norway, as 220 million daily dosages are consumed annually (population: 4,5 million)
Today, Axellus is the leader in both CLO & Omega-3 in the Nordic region. This leadership is built on the same strict sourcing & quality control and our in-house expertise in processing. The Möller’s brand is by far the biggest nutritional supplement brand in the Nordic region and still growing.
